It was another big game today. The League Two promotion race is incredibly tight, and any dropped points could be really costly, but Bradford City rose to the occasion, producing one of their best displays of the season to see off an uninspiring MK Dons team.
City made three changes from Tuesday, with Callum Johnson replacing the suspended Jack Shepherd in the back three, while the cup-tied Tayo Adaramola and Michael Mellon returned at wing back and up front, and it was one of the returnees that made the early goal. MK had a lot of the ball early on, but didn’t create anything with it, and while playing it around the back they invited the press. Mellon came in and nicked it off the defender, poking it through to Antoni Sarcevic who finished coolly.
MK, while looking relatively neat and tidy, did not cope with the City press, nor did they create anything. Their neat interchanges were let down by sloppiness under pressure, and it was City who carried the greater threat. Halliday was finding space down the right, while Pattison was making his trademark bursts from midfield. Even the centre backs were contributing in attack, with Callum Johnson racing forward before being barged over in the box – naturally, no penalty was given.
MK’s greatest assistance came from the officials, although they did deny a similar shout for a penalty at the other end. Soft free kicks would go their way, and at one point the referee seemed to invent his own rules, booking Adaramola for dissent having wrongly given a free kick against him then bizarrely making him leave the pitch for thirty seconds as if sin-binning him.
On a worrying note, Alex Pattison hobbled off partway through the first half. Hopefully this was a precautionary change, with the run of fixtures coming up, but it was reassuring to see Brandon Khela come on and do a passable impression of City’s number 16. It’s another sign of City’s depth, and bodes well for the next few weeks.
It was, in the end, a fairly dominant first half. The Bantams only had 42% possession, but did far more with it – eight shots, compared to MK who did a good impression of an out-of-form Mark Hughes team, having no shots at all in the half.
The second half began in much the same way as the first. City pressed, and MK couldn’t cope, while the ref disrupted the game as much as he could. Sarcevic was dragged down near the box – nothing given, while Khela committed an identical foul five seconds later and was booked. A Mellon pass very nearly put Bobby Pointon in, but the visiting keeper came out to block, then Adaramola drove into the box and his low cross was blocked at the far post with Sarcevic ready to tap in (naturally, no corner given).
The pressure kept coming, and eventually the second goal did too. Again, it came from MK trying to pass out from the back and running up against the City press. Richie Smallwood won it back and poked it forward to Pointon, who bisected the visiting defence with a perfect through ball. Sarcevic ran on to it, went round the keeper and slotted it into the net.
After the second goal, MK finally provided a bit of a threat – but not much of one, and City still looked the more likely to score again. Mellon, who was a constant pest for the back line, nearly forced his way through after robbing a defender, before being replaced by Jamie Walker. Walker also had chances, almost getting free in the box after linking with Pointon, then just missing a cross from the same player which flashed across the six yard box.
In the end it was a very comfortable win – City’s ninth in a row at home, equalling a record set in the 50s. Valley Parade is finally a fortress, and has been the foundation of our promotion push. More fine performances like this can only help in that regard.

MK Dons looked to have individual talent without much collective threat. We continue to look great, overcoming a bizarre refereeing spectacle.
Sarcevic is class but moreover it’s so encouraging that through all the many changes we’ve made over recent weeks – with lots of our strong performers unable to play – yet whoever slots in and ends up playing for us we’re maintaining shape and identity and purpose. And we keep scoring, and not conceding much. Kudos to GA for this. We have impressive momentum and team spirit.
I thought Mellon today was a case in point. As a striker he doesn’t seem to have a natural shooting ability nor a predator’s instinct (in contrast to Cook), which feels like it should be a problem…and yet (some parallels with Kavanagh here too) he contributed positively to the team performance, demonstrating purpose.
10 wins in a row at home would be awesome – is it too much to hope for?
I think Adaramola was made to go off to give a necklace (or bracelet?) to the team bench, but unless there is some daft rule I don’t know about, it doesn’t explain why he had to wait to be waved back on.
Great report, thanks again to Tim and all those who contribute.
Home form fantastic, get the away form to a semblance of respectability for a side in the automatics and we’ll romp it with a couple of games to spare. Bromley and Salford next, 6 points, then I’ll be buzzing never mind the players 😁
Yes, echo the views from above. I thought Mellon looked a clever player who you could see has come from a good academy structure. But more importantly than that, they, and us, seem to have a confidence and a self belief that we can sweep aside any team at the moment. Not since Parky have I felt that. Quite enjoyable watching City at the moment!
which is interesting as in the league we weren’t all that under Parkinson when we got promoted
Thank you for an excellent report.
I would not enjoy watching MK. They play as if in a training exercise, trying to play like Manchester City without the ability to do so.
I thought the Newport referee was poor and one-sided. But this chap hit a new low, The Adamarola incident summed him up, and did the sight, late on, of Smallwood apparently laughing at him.
Being old, I like tough footballers, and want to single Adamarola out. He is a very tough, even rough, lad. I like him, and hope he is taught to control his temper.
But I like City in general at present. Quite fast, exuberant, good to watch.
At last, we seem to be getting somewhere/
I said last match that I thought the referee against Newport was an exception to a generally good standard. Wow! That ref yesterday was inept. That was a stonewall penalty on Johnson and a red card. I thought theirs was a penalty too but that doesn’t even it up, we’d have been 2 up against 10!
Anyway, MK seem to think they’re a Premier League club with their attempts at total football and falling over and complaining at every challenge. We were superb again and as comfortable as we have been against anyone bar Walsall. 10/10 performances throughout. I hope injuries aren’t catching up with us with 2 big tough away games to come. Feels like the start of something!
Four points needed now from the next 2 away days. Then back home to celebrate number ten !
thank you Tim. Credit where it’s due to the club for a few things we knew were obviously needed especially in this run of games. Inc extra LWB, GK cover (which has seemingly inspired SW to next levels! Bringing Critchlow back, Trusting Bobby to develop, keeping and utilising Jamie Walker, and amongst many things of late, the pitch investment. A million miles better than this time last year!
very noticeable that although the attendances look similar to earlier in season and last season, it’s clear that VP looked very well populated yesterday. High percentage of Season ticket holders obviously attending which is great to see.
would be a great time to do the annual one off £5 offer when bring a friend or £10 each deal for next Saturday match Colchester, Tranmere or Crewe games (I think) just to ramp things up even more for the run in.
Good days these. A team to admire!
it was a great team effort with highly effective pressing. I lost count how many times MK’s defence weren’t allowed to build, passed back to the keeper, who was then charged at repeatedly by Mellon.
Adamarola gets fouled, gets booked,, gets to leave the playing area for at least 30 seconds. I didn’t see him pass any item of jewellery to anyone off the pitch, unless I missed it. No sign of injury treatment, so why?
Several ref decisions seemed bizarre but we won regardless. Bring on Bromley. Well done GA and the lads.
