Chaos, self-implosion, heart and heartbreak – Bradford City’s promotion hopes take a dent after rollercoaster 90 minutes

It was never going to be easy, but Bradford City have always had a habit of making things far more difficult than they need to be. This afternoon, in a game that would be undersold by describing it as chaotic, they managed to show courage in adversity, attacking prowess and huge amounts of fight, but came away with nothing after repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot.

There were two changes to the side that started against Crewe, with Brandon Khela replacing George Lapslie on the right of the front three while Jack Shepherd came in for Aden Baldwin in the middle of the back three. Neither of the replaced players were in the matchday squad, which raises some concerns about Baldwin’s availability going forwards, but there was the positive news that Antoni Sarcevic had returned to the substitutes’ bench.

It wasn’t quite as fast a start as last week, but it was still remarkable from City. Five minutes into the game, Brad Halliday launched a rarely-seen long throw into the box. It sailed over the targets at the near post, and Calum Kavanagh nipped ahead of his man to bury it from close range. Four minutes later, another long throw wasn’t properly cleared, and eventually the ball was worked to Alex Pattison who crossed from deep. Swindon made a complete mess of it, and the ball ricocheted to Kavanagh who prodded the ball past the keeper. Two-nil, and City were in dreamland.

Of course, it’s easy to get carried away with such a spectacular start. Swindon have been prolific lately and had shown some threat when breaking forward. Maybe it was time for one of City’s experienced heads to calm everyone down and ensure that we took control of the game. Instead, we got a moment of madness from captain Richie Smallwood, who miscontrolled the ball, lunged in with some force chasing his error and clattered his opponent with the follow-through. A brainless red card, and the game was suddenly turned on its head.

The Bantams tried to adapt, switching to a 3-5-1 with Khela dropping into the holding role and being flanked by Pattison and Bobby Pointon, but Swindon had their tails up and started causing problems. And then City shot themselves in the foot for a second time. APattison played a poor pass in his own half, Swindon broke into the box and Neill Byrne deflected the ball past his own keeper. From 2-0 up and cruising to a man down and wobbling, and it was almost entirely self-inflicted.

Swindon continued to press, but City did have some threat on the break, with Pattison charging forward and almost slipping Kavanagh through. Swindon’s defence did look wobbly when tested, and when the next goal came, it went to the visitors. It was a carbon-copy of the first, with Swindon not dealing with another Halliday long throw and Kavanagh nipping in to complete a poacher’s hattrick – all three goals from a combined distance of about 15 yards.

At this point, City just needed to stay calm and see things out to half time. There was Swindon pressure, but nothing too major until Ollie Clarke scuffed a shot that turned into a perfect through ball for Kabongo Tshimanga to finish from close range. City’s defenders did not cover themselves in glory here, with Byrne seemingly more interested in calling for a non-existent offside than either tracking his runner or cutting out the ball.

So, half time and 3-2. Time to reorganise following a breathless 45 minutes. Graham Alexander tried to do so, and this was where he made his major mistake of the afternoon. He removed Pattison and Pointon for Ciaran Kelly and Callum Johnson, making it seven defenders on the pitch. Halliday and Tayo Adaramola flanked Khela in a midfield three behind Kavanagh, while the rest of the defenders formed a back five.

This did not, however, make City any more secure at the back. What it did was almost completely neuter their counterattacking threat, allowing Swindon full control up to the edge of the City area. With host boss Ian Holloway gutting his midfield to throw on more strikers at the same time, there was a chance for City to hold their nerve, threaten on the counter and force Swindon back, but with only one attacker on they never had a chance to do so, and Swindon laid siege to the box.

Eventually, they forced their way through. Sam Walker had already made one fine save, and City had scrambled a key block to prevent another chance, but the attacks came in waves, and eventually Harry Smith turned home a cross for an equaliser that had been coming from the moment Alexander and City abandoned the attack.

Remarkably, City rallied at this point. Another long throw caused chaos, with the ball being flicked through for Kavanagh who was denied by a fine bit of goalkeeping from former City loanee Connor Ripley. Sarcevic was summoned from the bench to replace Khela, and gave City a bit more spark going forwards, and there was just a little bit of threat again. Then, incredibly, City managed a counter-attack, with Kavanagh breaking forward as the ref played advantage. His pass to Sarcevic was slightly overhit, and Sarcevic’s resultant shot was from a tighter angle than would be ideal, so the keeper made a save – only for the ball to fall straight to Halliday who slotted it into an empty net. 4-3, and just 13 minutes to hang on.

Surely at this point you might expect some fresh legs – maybe Wright for Adaramola, whose impact had been limited, or Jamie Walker to provide extra energy up front. Instead, we got nothing, and City dropped deeper and deeper again, the threat that they had briefly shown before scoring now completely gone. Swindon pushed, and pushed, and finally as the clock ticked over into stoppage time they got the equaliser. A cross swung over, a Harry Smith header despite the huge amount of City defenders on the pitch and it was 4-4.

Even then, a point would’ve been OK considering the circumstances, but City had one more bullet for their own feet. Another cross, a lunging, miscued clearance by Shepherd and it was 5-4. Gutting, for all of the heart and fight that they had shown, but also in many ways their own fault.

Alexander has done well with the team this season, but the half time substitutes were a mistake that surrendered all of the initiative to Swindon. In the first half, Swindon managed nine shots – in the second, this was eighteen as they camped outside our box and bombarded it with crosses.

But the real problem today was Richie Smallwood. It is the time of the season for our senior players and leaders to step up and use their experience for the good of the team, but instead of calmness and composure we got recklessness and stupidity, and this turned what should’ve been a comfortable victory into a chaotic, madcap defeat. It’s not the first time either – two years ago, in a key promotion game, it was a reckless Smallwood lunge that gave away a stoppage time penalty at Crewe. Again, Smallwood lost his head, and City lost the match.

Other results, with the exception of Port Vale, have gone the way of the Bantams, and they remain second in the league, albeit vulnerable to Doncaster’s game in hand on Tuesday. Thursday’s game against Notts County is now absolutely vital, and there’s a big hole in the middle of the pitch to fill. How we cope with this, and how we keep our heads going forwards, will be the key if this season is not to end in another heartbreak.

  1. Sorry Tim, rate to disagree with you but if Smallwood had not gone in ‘solid’ & they had broken & scored you (& others) would have slated him! He did what he has been praised for all season, took no prisoners, but got sent off for at worst a Yellow.

    • There were at least 5 City players for the “break away” to get past before they could score. The reality is that, for all his great form recently, Smallwood’s red card has been an accident waiting to happen for the last 10 games, too many poorly times, or over zealous challenges from the man paid extra to to set an example. He’s not a 19 year-old trying to show he’s good enough

    • I’m afraid your sadly in the minority, with your reasonable defence of Smallwood.

Apparently, reading some of the comments, he’s been an ill-disciplined menace for all the season.

Strangely, I don’t remember this getting mentioned much before today.

I despair at how irrational fans, on social media, often are. Illustrated by a big chunk of the Walsall ones, thinking their manager should be sacked.

Smallwood made a bad error. But all of his great play this season, should not be suddenly forgotten.

      • thanks for that, unpopular tho it may be, in my eyes of the replay (only watched once) it was a hard but fair 50:50 tackle – but everyone is entitled to their opinion (it’s still a free country)🫣

  2. doz ‘Hate to disagree’

  3. Think you’re spot on with this one, Tim. I’m hopeful Smallwood’s ban gets stripped back a little but it’s so so needless.

I’m also perplexed by the subs and hoping GA explains why we took the approach we did.

    Onto Thursday!

  4. Today felt as seismic as any defeat in City’s history. And I have been going for close to 50 years. The loss today probably blew our chances of a title. Which 40 years after the disaster would have been the single most fitting tribute. It also makes obtaining an automatic spot balanced on a knife edge. Other results have been kind in the main. But Losing our engine for 3 games changes the whole dynamic of a 4 game season.

Richie has been immense and many would argue his robust challenge was not a red card. I thought he allowed the referee to make a decision and the challenge didn’t even need to be made. The resulting free kick was taken from within their own half.

We can only hope that such a disappointment channels the players energy and doesn’t crush it. We are very lucky to be second at this take in the season given our away from all season.

However, we would have loved to be in this position at the start of the season. Nothing would be more Bradford City than beating Doncaster away.

it is in our hands still. They are a good and honest team. If they want it then it is theres and ours. And before RS got sent off today it looked like w did want it.

Massive respect to Kav, my young POTY, who keeps plugging away and trying valiantly to fill Cooks boots.

Come on City. Drag us over the line.

    • Correct in sparing a thought for Calum Kavanagh, feel a bit sad picturing sitting on the bus with his match ball.

I guess we’ll only really know how to look back on this game once it’s all come out in the wash at the end of the season. Hope it’s not as significant as it potentially feels it could be.

  5. anyone saying that wasn’t a red card and a stupid tackle intended to hurt an opposing player needs to have another look at it. The follow through was totally unnecessary after he’d already won the ball. Smallwood knew what he was doing and has totally let his teammates and club down.

  6. Like Ben, I feel this game has probably cost us our best chance of a league title since 1985.

I’m afraid the blame lies with just one man, our captain.

15 mins gone, 2 up and cruising and he stupidly gets himself sent off, and make no mistakes he deserved it.

The half time subs were just ridiculous though, 45 mins plus to invite pressure onto a questionable defensive unit resulted in what many would say it deserved.

No cover from midfield, it was like schoolboy attack v defence.

I think we will still go up but the title would have been a nice fitting end to the season.

  7. To be honest, out of all the teams to be playing effectively 90 minutes against with 10 men (adding the injury time) the last one you’d want to do it against would be a free scoring one like Swindon.

A similar situation against Crewe or similar and we probably could have held out.

But yeah, I think we all collective gulped when we saw that second half approach, we could tell within 5 minutes it was going to be an Alamo fight we’d never hold out on.

And not just today, as the circumstances were unusual, but we’ve desperately missed an option away from home who can hold the ball up and bully defenders like Cook could. I read earlier we’ve only come back from a losing position just twice all season for draw and a win, and was a last minute pea roller that somehow went in.

We really could have done with that option (not just today) instead of paying 6 figures and giving a permanent deal for Leigh who couldn’t even make the bench again.

  8. A bizarre game. Our two leaders losing their heads doesn’t set a good example for the rest of the team.

Smallwood’s let everyone down and I don’t know if he’ll be bothered or not. He’s a cold fish for sure. Possibly a harsh red card but he definitely went in to ‘do’ the other guy. I’ve been hugely impressed with him this season but no experienced captain worth his salt should lose his composure like that. It was a ridiculous challenge.

I’m a big fan of GA but he absolutely lost the plot at halftime with his substitutions and lack of substitutions when we took the lead.

A crazy game but no need to all sh*t ourselves. All the teams around the top except Vale are looking shaky.

I’m still confident we’re going up automatically but I want us to go up as champions of this league. There could be no better tribute for the tragedy at Valley Parade than to be crowned champions on the last day of the season.

  9. What a horrible game that was! Me and my 12 yr old son watched it on my iPhone sat in the car in an Aldi car park where we found enough signal. (On a camping holiday).

When the second goal went in we thought we were in for a comfortable and enjoyable afternoon of us going on to stuff Swindon and cement our place at top of the league. How wrong we were!

The stress of what ensued was painful, and anyone who watched the game will resonate with this. The feeling of inevitability of them scoring as they piled on the pressure in the first half, the jubilation of us going 3-1 up and the hope that we might just do this only to be crushed again with their 2nd and then 3rd goal. Hope again as we scored a forth only to be devastated in injury time twice!

My biggest frustration was how vulnerable we looked defensively despite having all 9 outfield players more or less consistently behind the ball. How is it that teams routinely come to VP and see out a 1 goal lead for 30-40 minutes with relative ease, while we can’t go 5 minutes without conceding chance after chance. I thought we looked almost lethargic at times, just allowing them to pass around and put balls into our box with little to no pressure on the ball. I understand not having much of an attacking threat when you go down to 10 men, but we should at least be pretty solid at the back if we’re defending a lead.

Hoping for a huge bounce back on Thursday night!

  10. My biggest criticism of Alexander today is he failed to take note of Holloway’s introduction of the very tricky Ameen to replace a more defensive minded player shortly after Smallwood’s stupid and deserved red card. That showed his intentions clearly and ultimately cost us.

Holloway immediately sensed that the best way to take advantage of the extra player was to try to open up our defence. Alexander also failed to note that Swindon weren’t launching balls into our box, they were trying to create openings through short interplay in front of, and at times, inside our penalty area.

The logic to therefore bring off our two best midfielders to throw on a 4th and 5th centre half is absolutely baffling. Swindon continued to ping balls to feet on the edge of our box which the five centre halves were struggling to deal with.

Ultimately the lack of an attacking outlet and not being able to retain possession simply meant the players were knackered from chasing shadows for 45-75 minutes. I really felt for every one of them. To try to hold on to a 1 goal lead for a full have against a team which scores lots of goals is just bizarre.

I really like Alexander, and have come to grudgingly respect Smallwood this season – as Big Dave says, he’s a cold fish and I don’t sense any connection between him and the club/supporters. But whatever, both royally messed this up today. I’m kind of more bothered about winning a title, especially given the timing, than I am about promotion. Promotion without significant backing is likely to lead to relegation back down here. A title is something that would live forever.

  11. I never want to see Smallwood in a City shirt again. And as others have said his reckless headless lunges might well have had him sent off a number of times before today. The challenge was completely unnecessary and it could end up costing us hugely.

    • Yes. Let’s forget about his superb performances this season and throw him under the bus because he made a bad error in this match.

He’s a defensive midfield player. It’s inevitable he will mistime some challenges. Under the circumstances, his disciplinary record is very good. Until today.

    • One of the most ridiculous and over the top comments I’ve ever seen.

He’s been absolutely fantastic this season, one mistake doesn’t undo that at all in comparison given that his performances are one of the main reasons that we’re in this position in the first place.

      • Correct!!

      • Couldn’t agree less! He really is not the reason we ‘are where we are’ Constant whining at his own players, whinging at referees, can’t kick a dead ball, corner, free kick nor penalty. Last week he behaved like a child when one of ours made an error. Stamping the ground in a tantrum. Spitting his dummy out. He’s been that player and captain ever since he joined. Over rated. There was and still might be an opportunity to win a league in the utmost respect for 1985. We all hope so especially those of us who were thete. Smallwood needs to take account for today. It was indefensible regardless of all his other efforts. To defend him is deeply sad in context. I, too, never want him to represent, let alone play for Bradford City again, and I first went in 1965. You would never see Stowell, Johnson, Singleton, McCall, Garry Jones be so effing stupid! Trevor Hockey maybe.

    • I never want to see you in a City shirt again

      • Back to school tomorrow? You might disagree with me but I am entitled to my opinion which is valid. Yesterday, indeed never, was not the day to behave like your school mate

  12. I don’t agree that GA’s subs were the problem.

If Swindon had 9 shots in the first half, then they were all after the sending off, i.e. in 30 minutes.

18 in the second half (i.e. 52 minutes) is of course still proportionally more – but that would be inevitable anyway, given that our ten men would be tiring.

Uncertain, what anyone thought would be better? We were just as bad with Pointon and Pattinson as they were basically bypassed.

And making the creativity via the wingbacks – nearly paid. Lest we forget we were winning in minute 90.

No. Smallwood fouled up here. Not the manager – although it would have made sense to have Huntington available (if fit of course) to come on to cover Smith.

Terrible heartbreaking defeat, but still in our hands.

    • Err… It was GA’s baffling changes at HT that cost us the game. Nothing else. Again (and again) it shows he cannot deliver when it counts (as the last few results show).

      • Shocking substitutions cost us any threat . Simple . I fear another season in the basement after this massive cock up .

      • Agree. GA must have seen the writing on the wall when Smallwood committed that tackle. He was sent off correctly. Why on earth did he not bring Walker on play him in midfield. Bringing extra defenders proved to be the wrong decision. Hardly any threat up front. I cannot see anything other that a play off place. We know what a lottery that can be. Thanks Smallwood for putting us in this position.

  13. I felt so so gutted at full time but with reflection, the fall out of this result is over the top in my opinion.
There’s no doubt that Smallwood has let his side down today – whether or not people think it’s a red card or not as it was completely unnecessary to use that much force – but it’s still in our own hands even in spite of another really poor result.
Simply put, this time in a week with a win against Notts County and results elsewhere, we could be five points clear again with three to go. Other than Port Vale, no other team is making a great case of passing us and a few months ago if you’d have offered our position as of the close of play today, every single fan would have taken that.
Finger pointing etc can wait until the end of the season if we don’t go up, for now it’s time to remain calm and give the lads a chance to make amends on Thursday.

  14. I was really impressed with how we started this game, knowing our away from was poor and knowing it was now on us to go out and get it, we did and it was really impressive, 2 nil and flying. Just fantastic.

Obviously it all went to sh1t but I will say that Richie has made that same ‘loose ball lunge’ about 30 times this season and this was just the one time the ref saw it differently. From that point on I thought it was more the lack of Richie than the 10 men, without the organisation and hefty challenges we were in trouble.

GA has a lot of work to do to replace him in the next few games.

  15. We are where we are because as a collective we have been very good but let’s be honest Smallwood and GA have performed exceptionally as well. As a set of supporters it was disgusting and disappointing to hear the negative reactions especially against those two in particular. Yes it’s extremely disappointing for a crucial game but you have got to manage your emotions far far better. We all make errors or do things others don’t agree with. We nearly beat the form team with then men. So the school report for yesterday includes us fans when it says must do better at key moments

  16. A game that got away from us. We just need to reset and keep a cool head and go again on Thursday. Two wins at home and something on the road we will be playing league one football next season.

  17. I said 8 games ago we should get an extra player in. Of course we then neat cheltenham easily, but after that we have taken 7 points from 7 games. We really should have been top now, not clinging on to automatics.

  18. i said to my son at half time that Alexander would need to make a sub to go more defensive- we were struggling too much in the first half after the sending off. The miscalculation was, I think, that he over compensated with the double change, for the reasons Tim sets out.

However this season ends, this game will linger in club folklore for a long time- from a 2-0 cruise to losing, due to playing for 90 minutes with 10 men, 9 goals, 2 own goals, conceding the losing goal in the 94th minute. I feel desperately sorry for Jack Shepherd. That Songo-esque disastrous lunge was down to tiredness, from a man who was on for the whole match, and had been defending throughout. He has been a great player for us, and I really hope it doesn’t get n his head in the last 4 games.

i decided in January that we had a squad that could get us promoted, and it would all come down to availability, injuries etc. The most worrying aspect of yesterday for me was Alexander revealing that the squad is battling a sickness bug- he said that was why he took Pattison off at half time. If that continues to cost us players, and Smallwood’s card doesn’t get downgraded to a yellow, and he misses all but one of the remaining fixtures, then it’s backs to the wall time.

    oh, for an easy life……!

  19. A game that got away from us. We just need to reset and keep a cool head and go again on Thursday. Two wins at home and something on the road we will be playing league one football next season.

  20. A game that got away from us. No need to panic just keep a cool head and go again on Thursday. I’m sure the squad are capable of getting two wins at home and something on the road to be playing league one football next season. It’s in our hands.

  21. I still find it hard to take this result this morning.

The number of times we play other teams any they get a man send off and we spend the whole game huffing and puffing and playing the ball sideways and backwards in an attempt to break them down and we can’t and we start saying stuff like ‘well it’s difficult against 10 men when they park the bus’ and we accept it!!

And yet there we are 2-0 up or even at 3-1 up and we can’t park the sodding bus!!!!

We can all blame Smallwood (and rightly so) but we also need to blame the resulting tactics BUT also the SO also put the fear of gid in everyone of our remaining players and they failed to make any critical challenges in the build up play – it’s like they were sh1t scared to touch anyone!!!

  22. I think the review is harsh. Referee was erratic. Swindon decent. Unlucky for decisions and deflections. To nearly have won with ten men for 75 minutes impressive. I mean absolute torture obviously but a fight. Away support was strong. We also deserved a penalty if not for being bundled over on the edge of the penalty area for being hauled down before that. At the end Alexander acknowledged the away support with a heart and a chin up message and I think the squad and manager have earned that. We are here despite losing Cook as well.

  23. if the full time whistle went at 89 mins GA would be praised and hailed a tactical genious for a 4 -3 win, and we would all be excited. Seven minutes later and he is being hung out to dry. He gambled and lost on this occasion, but we need to get positive for the games to come.

    come on city !!!

  24. Smallwood was unusually emotional just before the challenge when he raced over to the ref screaming . Uncertain what happened but that had a part to play .

He has been a massive contributor to our success so let’s give him a break .

The referees over the last few games have given us very little ( apart from playing on for the 4th goal ) and I am hopeful we will get a slice of luck over the next 4 games .

    • I agree that refs have been quite harsh to all season. The red cards at Crewe and Newport were both very harsh. Las week the Crewe player lunged with speed and without control and the referee was very lenient. The RS tackle was stupid, I’m sure he’s done it about 10 times this season and got away with it but not yesterday. It’s cost us the win.

I feel very dejected as I honestly thought it was the away win to help make us Champions and we’ve blown it. PV 5-0 win was a statement victory, ours was 3 point lost and a foolish self destruction.

We are in control for the automatics but the chance to win a title for the first time in 40yrs mixed with the city of culture and Fire anniversary has gone. All down to our captain…what a shame. (The wife thinks we will still do it! But she’s only been to VP once!)

  25. Painful one to take but this league has 1 or 2 more twists before it ends. Win Thursday then we are top again. Vale go to a rejuvenated Carlisle who know they have a good chance to survive with Accy to follow.

Important not to get too downhearted. I hope it’s taken as motivation and they really turn it on Thursday.

Still in our hands (just) to get top 3. Just hope this game has not damaged confidence in the team and they go at Notts full steam like we know they can.

Silly unnecessary challenge but return for the final game with a Beckham like free kick to win the title at home and all is forgiven.

Couple of big asks but you never know lol.

    • Not too sure Smallwood has a Beckham free kick in him? I’ve been watching this division for six years and haven’t seen anyone score from a direct free kick? Maybe a last min pen?

  26. There was plenty going on, off the pitch, between the two benches during the game. For someone who sounds very reasonable and rational in his interviews, Alexander appears to get easily riled during games, never more so than yesterday.

I can only think his anger at the sending off festered and clouded his thinking with those half time substitutions.

The ten men on the pitch put in a herculean shift but were let down by the senior man on the pitch and the senior man off it.

  27. A back 3 only works with a quality defensive midfielder in front of it. Look at Man Utd’s struggles this year. It was logical for GA to go to a back 5 with Johnson and Critchlow as orthodox full backs. The problem imo was keeping the two wing backs which left Khela on his own in the middle. An impossible task for the young loanee. This changed when Sarcevic came on. Surely those two must play CM Thursday? About the support: Yes we all had a chunter about not being able to play attack and defence (defence never win) for 50 minutes, but the noise levels throughout were very good and, I think appreciated by the players

  28. Great assessment of the game and wholeheartedly agree that the subs at half time were ridiculous and cost us at least a point. It became a game of attack v defence in the second half and I knew what the outcome would be – unfortunately only the missus was listening. Surrendering midfield gave us zero respite from the relentlous Swindon attacks. How we managed to grab the lead with 12 minutes left was against all the odds and a testament to the never say never attitude of the players. As for the sending off, I agree it was a rash challenge and no surprise Smallwood got his marching orders…..but the manager lost the plot as well and cost us the game. GA has brought hope and expectation back to the club, let’s hope he doesn’t make any more momentous mistakes like he did with those substitutions and failing to bring on some fresh legs earlier in the second half. The game was crying out for someone like Walker with all his guile and experience to take the pressure off the defence.

  29. Was too gutted on Saturday to read the match report, just read through today and thought I’ll comment, I doubt many will read it given it’s Monday now. But, more doing it to get my thoughts down and try to sift through the City result that has probably left me feeling more gutted than I can remember…

Smallwood has been brilliant all season and his full bloodedness and willing to go in where it may hurt, is surely one of the things lots of us like about him. How frustrated do fans get with a player who goes in half-heartedly, pulls out or not at all. However, he has played a significant part in us losing out on a very important 3 points, given how the game was going. Of course, though, we should have at the very least got ourselves a point, and it was a sickening way to lose the game with Shepherd putting the ball in the net. You can understand why he’s gone with Smith (I think) lurking behind but he just got it all wrong on his weaker right foot.

What a bunch of (insert expletive here) the Swindon players who crowded round Shepherd and celebrated in his face while he was devastated on the floor. I’m a, probably, more old fashioned football fan (despite being 31) and I would rather opposition footballers be aggressive and adversarial to each other, within reason, compared with the premier league tripe of hugging each other and swapping shirts with a rival after a defeat. So, one some level, I like that edge but, it felt overly excessive and would love to see them have a bad moment themselves next week (Smith own goal or last minute penalty miss?)

To avoid being a hypocrite, I do remember Jamie Walker doing that to a Forest Green player last season, and I enjoyed it at the time. It was when he’d put us 3-0 up at their place but the context and what Jamie did meant it was nowhere near as bad. Jamie had scored for one and it wasn’t a last minute goal to win the game + none of our other players joined in.

Including the Swindon game, I did think we needed 6 points from the next 3 games, so that now makes Notts and Chesterfield must wins in my eyes. This would take the pressure off the Doncaster game, which is bound to be a very difficult game.

I think Smallwood’s absence from the next 3 games will probably cost us the most, we arguably don’t have any midfielder who can do that defensive breaking up well and Smallwood protecting the back 3 is crucial for that system. I do worry we’ll now be too open to effectively play with the 3 at the back, we looked too open at times against Crewe and that was with Smallwood. Arguably Khela or Pattison are best suited to play there and I’d rather Khela, so you don’t lost Patto’s bursts from deep.

  30. Anybody else recall the 5-4 loss away to West Ham with the DiCanio tantrum in it. This reminded me of that. That feeling of O_O. What on earth have I just witnessed?!

I must admit my first instinct was for Sarcevic to cover Smallwood’s role.
