I’m not quite sure how they’re managing this.  A rise up a division, a revamp of the squad – there was every reason to expect a slow start to this season. And yet Bradford City have begun it as though this new-look squad have played together for years. They took it to even greater heights here to win and win well at the home of Championship outfit Blackburn.

Remember, if you’re old enough, 1998/99? City had gone on a summer spending spree but started terribly. A mere five points from the first seven games, as we anxiously waited for the team to gel. And sure, that worked out rather well – City were promoted to the Premier League – but it left us with the acquired conventional wisdom that close seasons of squad revamps will inevitably result in early bumps. Teething problems. A few missed beats.

Not something as smooth as this.

For here, just like on opening day against Wycombe and to a lesser extent at Northampton, City were organised, methodical and sharing in a collective purpose of executing a gameplan with hugely encouraging results. And it not only resulted in a place in the hat for round two of the League Cup, here we also got verification of the strength in depth that is now in place.

Because this was a City team with six starting XI changes, yet there were no holes to be found. Jensen Metcalfe made his City debut and set up a goal inside two minutes – it proved to be the start of a wonderful individual display. Will Swan got a first start and made it 2-0 before the game was four minutes old. His all round game was really good. Tyreik Wright continued his slow resurgence with a brilliant display. Aden Baldwin’s redemption arc began with a strong showing in his first appearance since THAT red card. Ciaran Kelly was fit again and superb. George Lapslie reminded us he has much to offer.

It was all just so encouraging, aided by the fastest of starts. Ibou Touray was the beneficiary of Metcalfe’s stunning early cross, meeting it at the backpost with a clinical finish. What a signing this guy is proving to be. Touray doesn’t attract the same attention as Josh Neufville but he is just what City needed. And with this goal the 30-year-old demonstrated he has much to offer going forward when there had been doubts.

It soon got even better. Blackburn boss Valérien Ismaël had awarded 18-year-old goalkeeper Nicholas Michalski a senior debut, and it’s fair to say he didn’t start well. Four minutes in Michalski raced out to intercept a through ball and attempted to keep possession rather than clear his lines. Tyreik Wright smelt blood and succesfully pressed the youngster to win possession. Then the City forward set up Swan to knock the ball into an empty net from the edge of the box.

Apart from that mad April period when Richie Smallwood was absent, City rarely lose winning positions under Graham Alexander and so Rovers had a mountain to climb. It took them an awfully long time to get going, and though they dominated the ball City always packed a more powerful punch when they went forwards.

All was going really well until an injury to the once-again-formidable Joe Wright meant he had to be withdrawn – hopefully he is okay for Saturday – with Curtis Tilt brought on. Within a few minutes – and just before the half time whistle – Rovers took advantage by pulling one back. Lewis Miller sent a powerful long throw into the box that Tilt didn’t deal with, and Neufville should have done better tracking Dion De Neve, who was able to score from the angle.

That set up a second half of some tension, but in truth Rovers only really ran up a head of steam in the final few minutes. City were indebted to an absolute wonder save from Sam Walker to keep their advantage. But despite some late scrambles and half-decent penalty appeals, City held on.

Maybe it could have been more comfortable. Stephen Humphrys came on as sub in the second half and frankly should have done better in several positions on the counter. But that was the only real gripe. Every player put in a huge shift. And the victory was thoroughly deserved. Their efforts helped by a truly awesome display of noise from a packed out Bantams away end.

I’m not quite sure how they’re managing this. But clearly, all the credit in the world belongs to Alexander for overseeing it. The way he, the coaching staff and the recruitment team have evolved the squad and prepared them to hit the ground running is a seriously impressive performance.

How far it can take City this campaign remains to be seen. But they’ve given themselves every chance of a happy season, with tonight another notable building block that sets the foundations for future success.

  1. Watched on Sky whilst on holiday on the Isle of Skye, and after this performance the Sky certainly is the limit !

  2. I couldn’t put it any better Jason. Don’t forget that Banksie save from Walker. The future looks bright down at the valley. Hold on to your hats and enjoy the ride for another memorable season? Strength and depth with quality. Bring on Luton Town, Saturday can’t come soon enough. The feel good factor has finally arrived at City!

  3. Even if we have a set back on Saturday and let’s say don’t win for four matches, I’m so confident that GA and the whole management team know what they are doing, that I know we’d bounce back.

  4. All that talk in the offseason about signing too many centre backs and we’re three down already. Hope they are minor knocks today.

Great debut by Jenson and amazing save by Sam.

Really interesting to see how we fare at the weekend

  5. Metcalfe was a revelation – calm and assured in possession and a hard worker too. He could be a real find. These early goals are starting to become signature GA – catch ‘em cold early on, defensively solid when they come back at us and always a threat on the counter. Lovely stuff and was very jealous of that away end.

  6. I enjoyed watching that game. Metcalfe particularly stood out. His ability to pick out a pass, good timing of a tackle, tenacious, energentic, and calm in that he always found space to operate initally reminded me of Cullen. Then the more I watched I felt he was more like a young Stu . Only 80mins I’ve seen him play (Chesterfield aside) however I’m confident there’s huge potential there.

  7. Best thing about these results is the embarrassment of the Taxi for GA Crew

    • It is worth remembering that we crawled over the line to gain promotion. Personally I would not have offered GA another contract until Christmas to see how both he and his team performed. We are currently riding the crest of a wave and long may it continue.

  8. I was really tempted to go to this and my envy peaked when I heard the noise after we were 2-0 up after only 4 minutes. Well, only myself to blame for deciding against going… You just can’t beat an away match, in a cup, against higher league opposition when you are winning. The win or get knocked out jeopardy of cup matches makes for incredible atmospheres.

So, massive credit to our away fans who went, they made me even more proud to be a City fan with the constant chanting and noise. Fair play to all of them!

On the pitch the team were amazing, Ibou Touray’s goal was brilliant, he made it look so easy but to hit the ball from a high cross, on the volley, while running forwards is no easy thing! I thought he was the man of the match and was so solid all game, I agree with the WoaP that if we have a season of consolidation and finishing mid table he’ll be one of the front runners for player of the season and/or Players’ player of the season (Just like Stephen Darby in 13/14).

Metcalfe was the other player I wanted to shout out, I was excited when we signed but wasn’t expecting him to be so good (I know, I know, it’s only one game). His calmness on the ball, range of passing, how well he pressed and always presenting himself as a passing option. He showed so much promise for a 20 year old who’d only made 30 professional appearances before yesterday.

Finally, Sam Walker, what a save that was late on, was one of those where I stared at the TV thinking how has that not gone in! Judging by the number of hands on heads from the Blackburn fans they were thinking the same too!

  9. Thanks to some stray cattle on the M62, it took us 1hr 40mins to get to Blackburn. City stuck 2 in whilst we queued to get in 🤦

Despite that, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening – great atmosphere and a performance to be proud of from everyone on the field. We have made some great signings, if they can keep this up (improve even!) then I think we will do more than consolidate this season.

Bring on Luton this Saturday, can’t wait 🙂

  10. Brilliantly organised, purposeful, & at times breathtaking. Dare I say, City are back!?
