Go on, hands up, who saw that coming? 0-3 up before the clock reached 50. 3. Three goals. Away at the (former) unbeaten league leaders who hadn’t even conceded a goal from open play. This Bradford City side is just different.
In fact, I’m not sure I should be surprised, Bradford City are the top scorers in the division. When could we last boast that? Back to back three goal hauls against much fancied sides in Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City see City go top of the pile with 17 goals from nine games.
But that’s not the only top spot they hold. Bradford City are top of League One. Okay, we’re not even ten games in yet and let’s not get carried away blah blah blah. Let’s just enjoy it. This club has had plenty of dark days over the last seven/eight years since our last spell in the third tier, we’re not used to being good.

City’s performance in the Welsh capital however was more that good. It was excellent. Superb. *add your own superlative*. City blew Cardiff away, they didn’t know what had hit them. Two up after half an hour and three after 49 minutes.
For the first – Tommy Leigh, take a bow. Tyreik Wright’s short corner found Leigh on the edge of the box who absolutely leathered it into the back of the net and past Nathan Trott before he knew it. It wasn’t Leigh’s first thunderous effort either – two minutes on the clock and the midfielder’s free kick flew inches wide of the far post, leaving Trott motionless.
It’s Leigh’s first goal in claret and amber and it was certainly a memorable one. It was a difficult start to life for the midfielder last season, playing out of position and looking like he didn’t have a place in this team. He’s like a player reborn in that central midfield role and dare I say it, he’s like a new signing.

City didn’t settle at one. They continued to press, to harry, to make the hosts very uncomfortable. Cardiff’s style of playing out from the back was causing them all sorts of issues and played straight into City’s hands. The Bantams played some excellent football too, constantly getting in behind Cardiff’s defensive line and having plenty of efforts on goal.
Just before the half hour mark, Will Swan came short to play a great ball over the top for Antoni Sarcevic to chase. He was sent clear into the box and when it looked like he would cross to Bobby Pointon, he chopped back and sold Gabriel Osho a new one with the Cardiff number two bringing down Sarcevic with a truly awful challenge. It was the most stone wall penalty since Ben Richards-Everton at Macclesfield. Up stepped Sarcevic to drill the ball down the middle and double City’s lead.
City were good value for the scoreline. And really is should’ve been more sooner. Pointon got in behind and crossed for an un-marked Sarcevic but he somehow headed over from a few yards out. Just before half time, Swan also sent a header over the bar when he should’ve done better. With Cardiff looking dangerous at the other end, you did worry we’d regret not taking at least one of those chances.

Fear not, up stepped Josh Neufville. Wright with a cheeky nutmeg on the near touchline played through Pointon, he slipped in Swan whose ball across the box was smashed home by City’s number seven for his second goal in two games. 0-3 and not a single person in the stadium could believe what they were seeing.
City continued to cause all sorts of problems. They were battling hard, winning second balls working space in dangerous areas.
It is notable that in the last couple of games, the wingbacks have found themselves in midfield, closing the gaps and preventing the overloads we were facing in the middle of the park. It is a tweak from Alexander when we don’t have the ball and it’s really pleasing to see such tactical flexibility.

Of course, in typical Bradford City fashion, we had to make it slightly more difficult for ourselves. 13 minutes from time and Cardiff got a goal back. Tom McIntyre, on for his debut, was unlucky as his header hit the back of Will Fish. Osho then had a shot blocked by Max Power and the ball deflected perfectly to Calum Robinson to slot home. A scrappy, disappointing goal to concede but the Bantams managed to navigate the remaining minutes (plus the addition eight) with little fuss.
Cardiff were certainly dangerous going forwards. They created some decent chances and put in a number of accurate crosses from wide areas. Sam Walker however, didn’t have a save of note to make. City were just too good, in every department.
Disappointingly City lost Leigh to sickness and Aden Baldwin to injury. Jenson Metcalfe came on and did well as did McIntyre. Fingers crossed they are back soon as the injury list does seem to be growing, particularly at centre half. It feels like the squad strength is already paying dividends and justifying Alexander’s wish to have greater numbers.

We’ll find out in a few months it City can maintain this level of performance and result. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t. But right now, it’s thoroughly enjoyable watching a Bradford City side attack with speed and score goals, no matter the opposition. And for a week at least, we are top of the league.
Next up, a trip further north to face Premier League Newcastle at St James park – it just gets better. We go up there knowing we’ll go for it, knowing we’ll give a proper account of ourselves regardless of the result.
The squad are full of confidence and who knows what can happen.

Another magnificent performance. Another 3-1 victory over a fancied team. Credit to Cardiff, they didn’t throw in towel like “big club” last week and were magnanimous in defeat.
They couldn’t live with us. Our support was fantastic, it came through loud and clear.
Massive credit to GA. He’s given us our pride back as a club. I love his “go balls out every game” pre match quote. As per an online comment I read “he’s like Parkinson but with a personality”.
Enjoy every minute fellow Bantams 👍
I accept I have been previously been critical of you Adam, but love this report!
What can we say, concerns about some of the team But it’s about this team (as a whole) that just delivers, exceeding our hopes whilst delivering our wishes!!
Newcastle on Wed. . . I guess the ££££s make it worth a loss (& ongoing injury risk) whilst a win will just feed our egos (& self belief) 👏👏👏
I was convinced at the start of this season that there is nothing to be afraid of in this division. This team has already proved it.
It’s a long season, and we may or may not get promoted, but I think we can say beyond all reasonable doubt that they are capable of it.
It’s a joy to watch, and possibly the most I’ve enjoyed watching a City team since 1998-99.
A great few days in S Wales capped off by the best away performance I have seen in years.
Thank you lads.
Chapeau Mr Alexander and co, delivering everything this fan base deserves and more. A year ago we were losing at Harrogate…now look at us. Let’s take this division by storm, there’s absolutely nothing to be concerned about (PS whoever closed the Neufville deal in the summer deserves the freedom of the city).
Simply magical watching City these days! It really is something to behold!
I’m still trying to get my head around the stat (noted in the last excellent WOAP podcast) relating to our possession – where we were 23rd (could be 24th now) in L1 for possession but can still turnover top teams and score 3 goals – it’s just nuts! Or is it top quality training and game planning / management? Whatever it is, we’re nailing it.
I said before the season began that I thought we’d have a good crack but in my wildest dreams, I did not see this start coming. Watching this City side play so well with so little of the ball is just amazing. Not only are we cutting it up on the pitch, we’re cutting it up as club who are definitely on the up! Not sure where we’ll land by the end of the season but my gut is telling me that we’ll be back where I want us to be come the start of next season! I’m not getting carried away either, the proof is out there on the pitch! Keep this up City!
Cannot even put a name forward for MOTM as they all got 10’s from me! What a team!
Thanks for this. As we pinch ourselves at the ongou g success in all competitions, we reflect on where it cmes from. A manager relentlessly focused and eager to learn from his own mistakes; and keep improving; decent nvest, ent by our owner; a strong organisational structure at last to-back him, delivering properly joint up recruitment; a strong team ethos.
All of those are true, but right now, I think the biggest factor is momentum and belief. The momentum won’t last for ever, but you’re right that we should enjoy it in the here and now. And no one cantake away the 20 point haul so far.
“We’re top of the league, we’re top of the league! We’re Bradford City, we’re top of the league!”
Get in 😁
It’s starting to look like a proper football club again.
Full credit to everyone involved.
Cheeky little win in Newcastle will be very nice indeed 👍
One of the rare away games I can ‘easily’ get to given where I now live and what a performance! So inventive and incisive going forward in a way that Cardiff (and, to be honest, more or less all previous City sides have been except the 1987-88 and 1998-99 sides) were not! Still playing little flicks and dinks going forward in injury time. Wow! Yes, the growing list of injured centre halves, the fact we can’t seem to keep the pace up for more than an hour and the fact that, like Wimbledon, someone will surely see or ‘high press’ tactics coming in the next 30+ games, all need to be borne in mind but it’s great to feel the manager, club and supporters are all on the same, positive page. Also agree, the signing of Neufville was truly inspired! CTID.
Where abouts in Cornwall are you based? I moved to St Austell last year. I was hoping to get to this game but a couple of unexplained collapses in recent weeks have kyboshed my travelling plans & driving. Bloody typical, been supporting City since 63 with more downs than ups and now we are playing some of the best footie in all my years I’m stuck at home with BantamsTV! Well done to those who attended. Volume from you all was well clear on the Radio Leeds stream. Totally outshone the Cardiff fans. And cheering the Warm Down was just Magic.
Whilst all the tributes are rightly going to the management and team for the excellent football currently being played I would to express appreciation to the owner for investing the money in the club to allow this progression to happen.
Hats off to Mr Rupp!
It’s getting a bit repetitive writing about this amazing team, but in a good way. They’re just ripping up the record books and smashing anything in their way. They’ve got a winning mentality and confidence is at its highest. The only worry is the injury list hopefully the squad is big enough to cope with. Last time I remember a team this good was 1998/99 season when we went up to the premiership. I’m looking forward to every game and so excited for them to play. Newcastle here we come the Bantam machine is on it’s way up the A1.
Thought we might get a good win at Cardiff, and we duly did – was not surprised at all, this has all been brewing since the management / scouting team excelled themselves over the summer. Agree with the comments above referring to the 1998-99 promotion season. Graham Alexander deserves the freedom of the city, including all pubs and curry houses. I would select squad players v Newcastle to avoid injuries, but in GA we trust…
Glad you remember the squad from 1998/99 season. This new generation have never had that success and now their enjoying this new era hopefully as successful has that squad?
Certainly hope so!
Wycombe, Stockport, Luton ,Blackburn, Stoke, Huddersfield…now Cardiff! What a dream start! Is there no end to this squad? Newcastle? This is what the great fans of Bradford City deserve!
Steve, am in Duloe so not far from you. Plymouth in November is the next ‘easy’ one for us and would happily give you a lift if you can’t get there under your own steam.
Prouder than ever to support Bradford City. Very excited at playing Cup holders Newcastle on Wednesday. Was last at St James’s Park back in ’84, we lost our League Cup tie 3-1 that night. I’ll be so happy if we can pull it off this time, cmon City!!!
