Bradford City came back from a self-inflicted deficit to see off a spirited but limited Colchester side and pick up their first win of the season.

Mark Hughes made two changes from the midweek game against Accrington, swapping out the wing-backs for the more attack minded Daniel Oyegoke and Alex Gilliead, but otherwise maintained the 3-4-3 system which he has started the season with.

City started fairly brightly, moving the ball quickly in possession and finding space down the flanks – and then, ten minutes in, shot themselves in the foot. Harry Lewis received a backpass then dallied on the ball in the box, completely oblivious to the striker closing him down. Inevitably, he lost the ball and after a brief scramble it was 1-0 to Colchester.

Frustration levels rose from the home crowd, not helped by more sloppy play from the Bantams and the usual levels of inconsistent refereeing. Jamie Walker was clattered, with no free kick being given, and limped off a few minutes later to be replaced by Tyler Smith.

City started to get themselves back into the game as the half went on. Clarke Oduor sparkled, slipping Andy Cook through to have a shot stopped at the near post then finding space to drag a shot wide from distance and linking up well with Oyegoke down the right. One set piece brought a good chance for Matty Platt well saved from the keeper, and finally the breakthrough was made.

Lewis’ long goal kick was flicked on by Cook to Smith, who found space down the side of the visitors’ defence and fizzed a cross-shot in. It was saved, but the rebound went straight on to Oduor’s head a few yards out. It was almost impossible to miss, and Oduor got the goal his performance deserved.

The second half started with the Bantams on top and Colchester pinned into their own half. Smith’s movement caused major issues, dragging the defence out of position. Oduor was also causing major issues and had one shot from a corner tipped on to the bar and over – naturally, the referee missed this and gave a goal kick. Gilliead then burst through the middle from wing back and slipped a pass through to Smith, whos shot was blocked – another goal seemed inevitable.

It came just before the hour mark, with a quick move from the back. Gilliead broke through the middle and passed to Oduor, whose clever flick set Pattison through. Andy Cook was screaming for the pass to his left, but Pattison instead finished brilliantly, firing the ball into the bottom corner.

Colchester were rocking, and City initially tried to press for the third goal. Oduor was causing havoc, and on the counter he fizzed a cross just past a sliding Cook at the far post. This was his last major action in the game, however, as he was surprisingly substituted for Emmanuel Osadebe.

It was at this point that the home side fell into the trap that they’d fallen into too many times last season. They sat back and hoped to see out the single goal victory, and in doing so let Colchester back into the game. Without Oduor, and with Osadebe having little to no impact in his place, there was suddenly no real threat on the counter, and Colchester monopolised possession and territory.

Hughes went safety-first with his later subs, bringing on Brad Halliday and Liam Ridehalgh, while moving Oyegoke into the back three in place of Ciaran Kelly, who had suffered a bang on the head. Kevin McDonald also replaced Smallwood at the back of the midfield, and Osadebe dropped back to make the system 3-5-2.

This didn’t really shift the balance of play, however, and Colchester came very close to equalising with a few minutes to go. Harry Lewis, however, made up for his earlier error with a fine save at his near post from Junior Tchamadeu, and Colchester didn’t get as close again.

Finally, in the nine minutes of second half stoppage time, the hosts managed to regain control of the game. The ball was kept better, and kept in the visitors’ half a lot more. Smith nearly rounded off his performance with a goal, but the pass from Cook forced him slightly too wide and he hit the side netting. Finally, the full time whistle came and the Bantams were off the mark for the season.

It was a strange performance at times. Colchester struggled to cope with the high press from City, and there was some excellent interplay and movement between Oduor, Pattison and Smith which caused real problems. On another day we could’ve had three or four goals.

Defensively, however, we still looked wobbly at times. The players look unsure of their positioning at times, and Oyegoke looks uncomfortable positionally when he’s on the right of the back three. This means that sitting deep doesn’t work, as the team just cedes territory and possession without gaining any sort of solidity.

The defensive issues should be solved with time and practice, particularly on the training ground, but they – and the lack of a natural left wing back – are the main limiters of this team at the moment. The big priority for the rest of the transfer window must be extra strengthening on the flanks, and if that happens there is the potential for this team to challenge again.

  1. Very encouraging yesterday. Fans want a more offensive team and playing at speed intensity, more dynamically will result in more chances being conceded. We need to be comfortable with this. Having listened to the MacAnthony podcast on the way over he describes it very well with similar changes in style happening at P’boro.

The back 3 are slow and will get caught but all appear to be good defenders.

Oyegoke looked even more uncomfortable positionally at RWB. Really hoping he improves. Not sure if Hughes had asked him to sweep but seemed very unsure defensively and a few yards deep of our CBs at times. Every Colchester opportunity came down that side.

Cook played well yesterday but had an off day in front of goal. Last year that meant defeat but 2 other stepped up yesterday. That is very encouraging and perhaps Walker going off may be a blessing in disguise as Smith offered a different threat (in a way John-Kymani Gordon would).

Not going to go over the top, the points that need rectifying are there for all to see but equally very promising.

  2. A good read and I wouldn’t disagree with any of that. Stand outs for me were the ability to counter at pace (post Walker injury especially). Goal threat carried by the midfield and the seeming lack of comfort with the back 3/5 down our right flank. Gillead seems able to perform as a WB which is no surprise, but the RWB position seems problematic. Encouraging from McDonald’s appearance later on, positional sense seemed excellent allowing him to break up threats before they fully developed. Given the pieces we currently have I would be interested to see how we’d go with a 4-1-3-2 with Mcdonald playing the anchor and taking 3 from Pattinson/Walker/Smallwood/Odour/Gillead/Osadebe/East and a returning Chapman with Cook and Smith up top.

  3. Was at the Accrington game and yesterday’s match, and have to say, we looked a lot better with Gillead at LWB. His versatility, pace and energy make him a good asset to the squad and his performance was a pleasant surprise for me. Oyegoke showed small flashes of his dribbling and running at defenders, and hopefully, he can improve with more games to become a good RWB for us. Although, I am not a fan of putting him as a right sided CB at all. His strengths seem to be better suited to going forward and I can see his lack of height and physicality being exploited when he is played in the back three.

It is early days but Pattison does seem to be one of the missing jigsaw pieces from last season, a midfielder who will make driving runs through the middle and can finish! Fair play to him for his never ending running, intelligent runs and what a finish!

Odour has also being a pleasant surprise, his signing was met with lots of reactions that ranged from meh to negative but his performance yesterday showed his strengths, good dribbler, pace and created at least 3 good chances (that I can remember) and good position for the goal.

Agree with Tim that Osedebe flattered to deceive when he came on, he does need to get his match sharpness up but he didn’t track back or press properly, and, if you are going to defend as a pressing team it begins with the attacking players. Hopeful he can have a few standout moments this season, after the awful way last season began for him, but, he needs to at least do the basics and run hard.

I’m still not wholly convinced by the new system but yesterday did ease some of my apprehensions and long may it continue.

  4. City’s second goal was as good as almost any I saw last season. Deliberate, played to two players strengths, executed very very well
It gave me a lot of encouragement for how this side may fare this season.
Great to get the three points. Hopefully the season starts here.
Shame about Walker. I fear this may be his city career in a nutshell. Two games. Injured. Out for 5-10 games. Back struggling behind the pace. Never quite fully playing to his undoubted potential.
Btw Jake young scored a beautifully taken goal for Swindon yesterday
    CTID

    • So did Angol and Canavan.the week before.
Obviously Hughes and Young did not see eye to eye about something.
Will their paths ever cross again?
      It happens in the game.
At least yesterday Smith,Odour and Pattinson looked better than.players we had last season.
Now we just have to sort out last seasons ‘two man team’ of Cook and Lewis.

      • Jake young is a Bradford city employee on loan at Swindon. Angol and Canavan are ex employees. It’s completely irrelevant what they are doing now. It does appear young and hughes don’t see eye to eye but whilst a city employee is out there performing well I’ll take an interest. Jake young is currently contracted until summer 2025. Mark hughes until 2024 so maybe we’ll see young back under a new manager?

      • Exactly the point I was making.

      • Exactly the point I was making.

  5. City win, Leeds lose, town lose, I’ve had worse Saturdays.

The pleasing thing about the last two games for me is that we have been willing to mix it up a bit, play a bit more direct at times which is something we lacked last season especially early on. A long kick from Harry Lewis played
a part in both the goal at Accrington and the first goal yesterday. I’ve always thought that messing around with the ball too much in our own half just gives the opposition time to get organised.

The worrying thing about yesterday was the way we sat back after we had scored the second goal and the cautious substitutions after. Too often in the past we’ve been punished doing this and when we olay against better opposition than Colchester you can see us getting punished again

  6. Smith seems to be the better attacking fit in this formation.
Link up play from defence to midfield got us up the pitch quicker, early days but some very encouraging partnerships.
18 mins extra time in a game that saw time wasting instantly punished will mean strategic subs & team fitness will have a massive bearing on how games finish.

  7. Great article as ever, but please can somebody buy John Dewhirst a colour film to put in his camera, or explain the reasoning behind the arthouse black and white photos. Thanks Dave

    • Agree only change I would ever wish to make on the site. Breads a negative vibe in my opinion- sorry Jason just my opinion.

      • Art house photos? LOL. The shots are taken from my seat in the stand on a compact camera (digital btw as opposed to analogue). I don’t particularly want to have to take a zoom lens / DSLR combo to the match and nor would it be permitted but if you want to crowd fund a corresponding compact colour camera for me I won’t complain.

      • Everyone: Why aren’t the photos in colour so we can see the kits etc properly?
JD (who intentionally bought a black and white only camera): Pretentious? Moi?

I only came to the match report just now because my dad in Cornwall texted me to to say “I’m getting really p***d off with those B/W photos on WOAP. Whats the point? I want to see the strip colours”.

        Just use your phone John.

      • Sorry guys, if the photos aren’t good enough I’ll leave it to someone else to take them. Plenty enough negativity as it is without my photos adding to the vibe.

And Leon, really sorry that your dad is disappointed but lucky he’s got you to cheer him up.

      • Apologies John. There is more to life I know! Keep doing what your doing mate it’s much appreciated. Didn’t mean to create a spiral of negativity towards you.

    • Jeez I know it will be stair rods down there but that must be one boring holiday if all there is to do is complain about WOAPs photographs. Pub will be open now I suppose

      • My dad? Hes lived in Cornwall since 1996 and last got to a game in 2014. WOAP is his connection to the club. Is he allowed an opinion or shall I tell him he isn’t because Paul Westcott said so?

      • Come on Leon be honest with us/yourself. You spend your life online and look for any opportunity to pile on JD. Its pathetic. It’s a convenient fiction for you to have another dig. End of.

      • Paul are you suggesting that I’ve made up that my dad lives in Cornwall? Or that he doesn’t like the B/W photos? Would you like his address, maybe a copy of his Council Tax bill? Would you like to see the text he sent me this morning?

I don’t look for opportunities to “pile on” John Dewhirst, in fact he blocked me on Twitter in 2020 (After telling me to “fuck off back under my rock” of course) so opportunities are not that easy to come by. I couldn’t care less what you think of me Paul, nor what Mr Dewhirst thinks of me, my opinion of you both is too low for such things to make an impression on me. I usually avoid the comments section on here because of the childish nature of some of the commenters. Today has been a perfect example of why. Condescending, up their own backsides and not very nice to people who disagree with them. Dewhirst is a bully and cannot countenance contrary opinions to his own or opinions in language he deems unacceptable. Quite the gatekeeper isn’t he. You and he seem well suited to each other.

  8. Good win ,we have added goals to the squad and it paid off yesterday, last season it would have been a draw ,but we need to find some pace at the back .The better teams will expose the lack of pace especially now we are playing a high line ,and why take off the best player on the pitch was he injured or was back to last season and keep what we have, it just sends a message to the opposition to attack us and with extra time been added on to games we will concide late goals .

  9. I don’t understand how 18 minutes of extra time will have any impact on the players fitness? Is it because they were stood around for the 18 minutes that were wasted? Maybe instead of standing around they could be provided with deckchairs?

  10. Well here we are again , another season and as before we’re not quite sure what we’re going to see at VP. The new signings look to have added something to the squad , Pattison particularly to me , looks like he’ll give us that drive and commitment and has an eye for goal. Odour looks like he has plenty more to come , Oyegoke , not sure yet. The formation for me isn’t going to work with Platt in a 3 , as a centre half he’s steady but he worried me Sat everytime he got the ball at the back , but as i told friends he’s hardly played for mths so might need time. Not impressed at the moment but there’s a long way to go so i’m hopeful things will begin to click.

  11. Now I know the reason John. Thank you – I’ll sleep easy tonight!

  12. I’m just back from a week’s holiday. Despite trying to switch off I spent last week dealing with angry emails from readers and one long-time reader vowing never to read WOAP again. And this morning John has told me he won’t be doing any more photos for WOAP because of these comments.

Running this site is an absolute curse sometimes.

So anyway you can stop hounding John now, as you’ve got your wish.

  13. Opportunity for what? You’ve just done your textbook response to someone who disagrees with you – only they’re lucky you didn’t tell them to “fuck off and crawl back under your rock” like you did to me when I called you out on identical behaviour to others. They didn’t even disagree with you, they just expressed a preference for colour photos and you couldn’t resist being a smart arse rather than just say “my camera only takes B/W I’m afraid”. Enjoy your self imposed exile from these pages.

    • ‘inserts popcorn eating gif’…

    • Leon, taking the photos is more hassle than it’s worth and if people prefer colour images – and expressly don’t want monochrome – I’ll leave it to someone else to provide them because I can’t provide that solution. It’s black and white, so to speak. Taking photos on a mobile camera is hardly an option but maybe you can step in and prove me wrong. BTW If it’s any consolation, I wasn’t drunk when I said that but I cannot for the life of me understand why I did.

  14. I’ve re-read the photo comments three times now, no one ‘hounded’ John, a couple of people suggested he uses colour, if he doesn’t like that comment then he’s free to leave.

‘Width of a Post’ if you were on holiday you should be ignoring emails. Especially angry ones, I see this site as I do TV, if I didn’t like it I’d go and find something else, haters should especially be ignored.

They do say the more comments and feedback you get, good or bad, just shows what a good site you have.

Overall still a good read and well worthwhile articles, I hope to see you keep it going. It’s by far the best source of insightful reviews and Bradford City commentary I know of.

  15. I find it incredible that people can become so abusive over the use of monochrome photos that someone has voluntarily shared with us. We don’t subscribe or pay for the privilege of reading what’s on this site. We are encouraged to give our opinions on both the games, the club and the content but then start with the “entitled aggression “. Poor stuff! We’re neither clients nor customers.

  16. Blimey I didn’t mean to start world war three on here, I only meant my original comment as a jokey, throwaway one. I’ve always thought the articles would look better with a colour picture. I assumed they’d been taken on a phone and switched to black and white.
I’ll take the bloody pictures in future – I don’t require a crowd funded, compact colour camera with a zoom lens/ DSLR combo either.

  17. The nay sayers at the Cows Arse seem to be having an effect on Leon Carroll.

    • What do you mean by “having an effect”? I’ve been posting on there for years, I don’t hide it – my username is obvious who i am.

The difference between here and there, is that on The Cows Arse we can disagree without resorting to name calling or accusing people of lying about family members. We are cynical on there because there is and has been for a long time plenty to be cynical about. But suggestions we don’t care about the club, aren’t “proper fans” or “would rather be proved right than the club be successful” just show how small minded a lot of people are, particularly on this comments board.

Who in their right mind would spend the time we do thinking and discussing Bradford City if we didn’t care? No one. Who would find it so frustrating that the club lurches from one mediocre season to the next if they didn’t care?

Yes we use bad language and take the mickey out of mindlessly positive people and those that accuse us ofvthe things above, but we do it in the confines of our own forum pages which I highly doubt anyone but us visits.

It’s actually a forum where differing views are welcomed and discussions never resort to the childishness we’ve seen on here today. Yes we swear, because that’s how lots of people talk in normal life. That’s how people talk to their mates. But I’ve never been insulted on there, not even once, whearas on here I’ve been mocked for my enthusiasm for a new ground, for desiring a change in ownership, and today I’ve been told I’ve made up the fact that my dad lives in Cornwall and called pathetic by a condescending geriatric solicitor with manky teeth.

This all feels familiar and reminds me of a Facebook group I was once in for musicians and others involved in the indiepop scene. In supporting a person of colour who was highlighting blatant racism in the group, I used “bad words”. I was accused of being drunk and that I was ruining the ‘polite tea room atmosphere’ of the group. The parallels are uncanny.

My response then, as it is now, was “F*ck your tearoom”.

  18. Don’t think I didn’t notice the sly use of my full name btw Christian Oldcorn. Not sure what point you were trying to make by doing that. My identity online is not secret, but when you’ve got an unusual first name you don’t really need to use your surname to be recognised.

  19. Given this debate has escalated quite a bit with one very sweary post and another that was a bit silly, I’m going to close down comments on this match review. I also deleted those last two comments. Don’t really want to have the F and C words on this site. Thanks. Jason
