The Bantams wilt in Wiltshire as the winless run stretches to seven games

Swindon Town 2
Austin 17 (pen), Devoy 45+2
Bradford City 0

By Adam Raj

At least there was one positive to come from today. The will he/won’t he Jake Young situation finally has a definitive answer after his second half cameo ended any doubt about who he’d be playing for come February 1st.

But that’s where the positives end, because this was a rancid afternoon for Bradford City. Like seriously bad.

Swindon, fresh from sacking former Bantam Michael Flynn, had come into this game with one win in eight. Likewise, City’s form read no wins in six. It may have been a matchup between the worst form sides in the division but it was still a fixture where City were comprehensively beaten.

And if that doesn’t set alarm bells ringing, I don’t know what will. The hosts were full value for their victory and clean sheet despite being in disarray off the field and in wretched form on it. City were swept aside like a part time side in a pre season friendly. It was that bad.

Supporter’s anger towards Stefan Rupp and Ryan Sparks seems to be at an all time high, but this defeat felt particularly damaging for Graham Alexander.

Eyebrows were raised before a ball was even kicked with the news of Alexander’s starting eleven. Jon Tomkinson dropped, Tyler Smith recalled, the continued roles on the periphery for Bobby Pointon and Harry Chapman and the continued and curious absence of Matty Platt. It was a lineup that threw up more questions than answers, with the reason for a glaring absence of any creative players in that team being top of my list.

It will come as a surprise to absolutely nobody that notoriously slow starters Bradford City once again started on the back foot in Wiltshire. Town had City penned into their defensive third, unable to escape and unable to wrestle any semblance of control in the game. Swindon’s play was bright, crisp and energetic whilst City’s was laboured, aimless and devoid of any ideas.

Neat play between Udoka Godwin-Malife, Rushan Hepburn-Murphy and Paul Glatzel saw the latter get wrong side of Ciaran Kelly and in an attempt to rectify his error, the Irish centre half clumsily fouled Glatzel for a stonewall penalty. As the clock ticked past 16 minutes, veteran striker Charlie Austin duly dispatched his eighth goal of the season.

City were behind early in a game yet again. They have a number of bad habits that they cannot get out of but this might be the most damaging.

Swindon played some excellent football in that first half. They played with real flair and athleticism which City could not cope with in the slightest. It was exactly the sort of display you’d expect to see a young side have against a team with a core of veterans. Town midfielder Saidou Khan was the best player on the pitch by some distance, dominating that midfield on his own with his mobility but also his quality in possession.

In contrast, City were about as bad as you could imagine. Swindon played through a half hearted press with ease time and time again and the aimless yet constant long balls forwards were meat and drink to their back line.

And on the brink of halftime, things went from bad to worse. Austin, with some clever build up play, sent a ball over the top of City’s defensive line which played through Glatzel 1v1 with Sam Walker. Sam Stubbs had recovered, but the Town number nine sat him down and squared for Dawson Devoy to score his first for the club. It really was amateurish defending – Kelly and Ash Taylor just ball watching, admiring Austin’s touch, turn and pass, allowing Glatzel to run past them without any difficulty.

Swindon must have been licking their lips when they saw Tomkinson had been benched. Dropping the only centre half with an ounce of pace and mobility played straight into their hands as Stubbs, Kelly and Taylor were all repeatedly exposed with balls in behind and in the channels. The decision to play three immobile centre halves against this Swindon side made no sense at 2pm and makes even less sense now.

Richie Smallwood’s display was not particularly pleasant. Ignoring his woeful set pieces and infuriating lumped balls forwards, you would be forgiven for thinking he was trying to get sent off. He spent the first 45 minutes smashing into people like a petulant child, got booked in the second half for a stray elbow and should’ve conceded a penalty and been sent off when he dragged Glatzel down in the box.

Fortunately, things didn’t get even worse for the Bantams. The goals conceded remained two which was the best they could hope for in the circumstances. Things didn’t get any better in the second half though, despite a triple change at half time. Smith, Andy Cook and Liam Ridehalgh all hooked with Young, Chapman and Lewis Richards their replacements. Alexander switched from a 3-5-2 to a 3-4-3, but the changes had no effect. City went from lumping the ball to Andy Cook to lumping the ball to Jake Young.

“Jake Young, he wants to come home” sang the home fans. He probably does to be fair, but then again so did the 450 travelling Bantams. In all seriousness, he must wonder what he’s come back to. He’s walked into a side devoid of ideas, creating little, if anything, in games and in a style that involves booting the ball at his head as many times as humanly possible. It’s no wonder that the sharpest and brightest player in white this afternoon was the man who hasn’t been at the club for the past six months.

And that leads us back to Alexander. There’s no doubt that he talks a good game, he says all the things we want to hear and that may be a factor as to why some fans are still very hesitant in laying criticism at his door. That and the fact that there are greater problems than the manager at this club.

However, in my opinion, he is getting away with murder. The style of football Alexander has us playing is a horrible watch – long ball after long ball, defensive heavy team selections, the ostracising of flair players and the perseverance with his favoured but underperforming players. I’m watching the product on the pitch and there’s absolutely nothing to get excited about. I cannot think of any redeeming features about this brand of football. Sparks’ recent claim labelling this as ”exciting” football is nothing short of ridiculous.

Alexander’s reasoning for dropping Tomkinson this afternoon was simply that he didn’t play well in midweek against Salford. Fair enough in principle, but Taylor, Ridehalgh, Oduor and Smallwood have had multiple poor/ineffective performances under his leadership and they haven’t been discarded at the first opportunity. And what about Chapman and Pointon? The pair had excellent games at Derby but after one quiet game against Colchester, they were dropped, and neither have started since.

And for a manager who often quotes metrics and statistics in his interviews, his distrust of Pointon is hard to understand. No City player has averaged more chances created or made more successful passes into the final third than the youngster and he is also the club’s second top assister. For a team struggling with creating clear cut chances, how does Alexander justify giving him just 14 minutes of action in the last two games?

Sorry, but it doesn’t add up Graham.

Quite where City go from here is anyone’s guess. Whilst these forums and social media do not speak for all supporters, it does seem the general consensus is that both Sparks and Rupp have lost the trust and support of the Bradford faithful. The players were booed ON to the pitch for the second half this afternoon which goes to show how little affinity the supporters have for this group of players and the manager’s indefensible decisions and style of football make it hard to put any trust in him for the future.

What a mess.

  1. I don’t think GA is a fit for City , at least under MH we had some decent football. He has to go unfortunately for him .

  2. The need to cut the squad aisde, I don’t know if GA has instructions from above or decided himself he doesn’t need to bring in new players.

The Hughes squad was never going to work long-term for GA and not being able to bring in his own players – at this point of the transfer window signings now are going to be panic buys – has totally backfired.

While we need multiple changes, Losing Walker and Pattison immediately was unfortunate, but more effort should have been made to fill this position.

I actually wonder if one of the reasons why the Cowleys (and maybe others) turned us down was becuse they would have almosy nothing to work with this window but would be immediately expected to repeat the performance of last season.

    • Agree. GA football is poor, but I reckon the playing budget was already spent by Hughes, so GA had to ship out before he could bring in.

We can’t afford to sack GA though with over 2 years left on his contract.

i personally don’t blame GA for this season, we’ll have to see what next brings for that.

I do, however, blame him for continually picking underperforming dross week in week out.

  3. I agree time to send him packing the football is horrible to watch.

  4. I’m pretty lost for words after watching that!! GA says” What we were really good at was dominating the opposition in a mental sense. We were in their faces and didn’t give them any time on the ball” Sorry GA but not sure what game you were watching as that’s not what I saw or thought all game! It was rubbish from start to finish! Where the hell we go from here I have no idea!

    • GA was talking about the previous run of games before Salford when he said that!
However, it doesn’t change the fact, per your other comments, that we were absolute rubbish and where we go from here…

  5. The last sentence “what a mess” just sums the club up at the minute, it could be our club motto.

Even if we wanted to get rid of Alexander would anyone really have faith in Sparks chosing his replacement?? I know I wouldn’t. If we stick with him long term and let him rebuild the squad and the fans complain about the type of football he plays are we then going to replace him In 12 months time with a manager who plays completely differently again who will then be stuck with a squad built to play long ball football and lacking creativity?? I’m not calling for Alexander to be sacked, but if the football remains as dire until the end of the season it’s risky letting him rebuild the squad this summer.

With no long term plan from the club I just don’t see where we go from here. I think season ticket sales are going to drop dramatically anyway but if we start next season off badly and the football is dire like today then God knows what the crowds will be like next season and you can see another managerial change again to try win supporters back.

Personally I would like to see Sparks replaced ASAP and replaced with a CEO who knows football and who as got short, medium and a long term plan preferably before any summer recruitment is done because again like the last sentence said what are a mess.

    • I hold the same sentiment. If Rupp is looking to maximize the sale price, Sparks is sending it the wrong way. At some point he will need to action a change to try and achieve that. I just don’t know when. Hoping poor season ticket sales is the driver.

  6. Absolutely agree 100%. This cannot go on. Why blame Rupp and Sparks? They don’t train the players, select the team, decide tactics and substitute decisions. These responsibilities are that of the coach and manager! They have performed badly and I put the problems at their door. Taking Cook off at half time was grave. No big man up front. Expecting Young to act as centre forward is idiotic at best. In my view, Alexander has 2 games. If nothing changes he goes. I am so angry. City were up against a managerless team with a worse record than us and we were totally out played. We are in the desendency and vulnerable to be dragged down to the relegation positions.
Alexander talks a good game but does not deliver. I can now see why MK Don’s got shut. He was appointed on the rebound and not first choice. I watched the first half on iplayer but gave up after half time. Totally disgusted with this hoof type tactics. One dimensional. No prospect of this style moving us forward. Team and tactics needs changing. His persistence of playing is favourites has to change also. God help us!

    • I wouldn’t give him 2 days never mind 2 games. The bench had everyone that should have been starting on it ! Anyone selecting Taylor and Odour / Osedebe etc (I know he’s left now) as I stated 2 months ago isn’t getting us anywhere! They showed they can play football when instructed to v Derby but more weeks go by they will forget how to do it completely, the players must be pig sick of these instructions and they are showing it. Quick get a new CEO (Rupp do you know anyone In the English game though) then a new manager. Can’t see it myself!

    • Come on city 💙 win 🏆

  7. A really confusing line up, usually you can see the thinking behind a selection even if you disagree but today… I’m just at a loss.

I have no idea how someone looked at all the players available and decided the best way to beat a young out of form team was to leave out every creative player we have, leave our defensive pace on the bench and stick with an out of form slow Andy cook over an in form young striker that knows the oppo inside out.

    Totally baffling

  8. It’s awful to watch. It’s bad sides beating us.

A strong argument that every player on the bench was better than the player GA selected ahead of them.

  9. Talks a good game? His interview was embarrassing and confusing. None of it made any sense. As I said before I don’t believe in rash premature sackings but this bloke is utterly clueless. No wonder MK got rid so quick – similar pattern – good start then slump playing awful football.

We won’t go down this season but we will next if he stays for much longer.

  10. The thing I really don’t understand is the managers reluctance to use Bobby Pointon. I have watched City for nearly 60 years and he is one of the most skilful players I have seen at such a young age. I watched Liverpool on TV the other day and I was struck by the similarity in style and skill set of Bobby to Harvey Elliott one of their young stars. It worries me that Graham Alexander seems to be ignoring such a talented young player who the City fans relate to. Why? Draw your own conclusions.

    • Pointon still has a lot of developing to do but he offers potential, skill, creativity, desire, drive. Non of which is offered by Oduor

  11. Indeed. It must be incredibly disheartening to players who know they have more footballing ability, intelligence and skill and are benched every week for this almost anti-football approach.

If GA wants to play this style but has players who don’t suit it, he should have demanded as a condition of his recruitment some funds be made available to recruit some of the personnel to do it.

  12. Does anyone think that the Jake Young substitution was on the back of a backlash of social media to Mr Sparks 2-0 down at halftime, cos I think so, why would you risk a potential big sale to a higher league at last chance cafe deadline day when clubs panic and pay the demand, then to come on so that he had to play for Bradford for the rest of the season, granted me and the probably the rest of City fans are over the moon, believe me I am flabbergasted and absolutely chuffed to bits, but I think this is to paper over the cracks of bad recruitment overall and now we have a real good chance of the Bristol Street Trophy and that will be a full paper mache for the season.

Trying not to be negative, but running out of positive’s, I just hope & pray someone with money & interest comes in for us 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 and wipes the face of BCFC 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

    • I think it was Alexander sticking two fingers up at Sparks. There could be fireworks between them now and parting of the ways!

  13. This nonsense needs action. Can’t believe nobody (inc me) has so far not called a fans forum between us to come up with a plan to take over this mess ourselves, Drum up a panel of fans and those amongst us that could influence something close to a % stake in the club at least?
    There is no accountability anywhere.
Where’s the likes of Lawn Rhodes Mason Baldwin McCall Hendrie etc etc everyone sat on there hands doing nothing about this other than moan on message boards and YouTube every year. Jason question is to you do you know anyone who would at least be capable to head this sort of project up at least to try. We have said on recent WOP that club aren’t even fulfilling there agenda on fans meetings twice a year so why can’t we create our own, if done correctly then I’m confident it would pack out a venue with many frustrated yet passionate fans. Feel free to contact me on email to chat if you could help guide me in anyway?
    Rich

    • I am afraid that the club/ RS does not like organised groups and have marginalised all of them with the exception of the totally ineffective Supporters Trust and the Supporters Board who are in the clubs pocket.
I have even heard that RS would like to get rid of the group which are now club ambassadors and were Associate Directors and who form the party in the board room on match days. He simply does not like to have people around the club who have been there before him and known more than him.
There have been requests for fans forum ( live events, not T&A style exclusives) but these have been rebuffed despite the club contravening the clubs own charter.
Go to the charter on the clubs website and the first thing it says “We are a listening club”.
      Really???

      • Well done Mark for sticking your net above the parapet.

The supporter’s Trust lost any integrity when they supped tea (presumably) with Rahic and then effectively blamed the fans they are in existence to support.

Waste of time. And do not represent the many city fans I know.

  14. I’ve just finished listening to GA’s interview on Radio Leeds and i thought Derek Adams was delusional but GA takes it to a whole different level!!!

The most frustrating thing for me as a fan is looking at league 1 and seeing Stevenage. We had the opportunity to appoint Steve Evans and we chose not to because of his history and fan opinions. Look at where we are and look at Stevenage. Stevenage are Currently 6th in League 1 with games in hand. A team built on a shoestring budget but a team that fight for one another. A team that just beat Wigan 3-2 with a certain Vadaine Oliver starting upfront.

People came out saying if we appointed Steve Evans they wouldn’t renew their season tickets, Only need to look at VP on Tuesday against Salford and it looks like many have already spoken with their feet and won’t be renewing come end of the season and thats without even touching Steve Evans.

Now there’s no gurantee that Steve Evans would have taken us out of this league but i can gurantee one thing, He wouldn’t have accepted the level of performances we’re seeing at the moment. Yeah he nots everyone’s cup of tea i appreciate that and i don’t condone his past but look at where we are now, Currently sat 18th in League 2 with no hope of promotion, another year of rebuilding and more league 2 football and look at little Stevenage.

For me personally if we want out this league then he provides the best opportunity. Yeah i’ll await the backlash from fans who will slate him for his past but look across the message boards and fan feeling at the moment. Would it really get any worse appointing Steve Evans or present the best opportunity to salvage something and build for next season

    • I agree CookieMonster I have said we should have appointed Evans on previous WOTP articles and to have let bygones be bygones and have bitten the bullet. Who cares as long as we move into the higher league. I am of the same opinion but nobody agreed.

  15. Well – I’ve nothing more to add. It’s all been said above.

If you want to pick over the bones for positives you could say that Gilly was his consistent, professional self – he should be captain. Young looked bright when he came on ( I thought he might sulk) as did Chapman when he moved to the left. I also thought McDondald played well when he came on. Can’t quite belive he hasn’t played more.

From where I stood in the stands the penalty looked harsh. It looked to me as if Kelly was pulled down first – but others will have had a better view.

I only mention these things because I can’t add to what’s been said above. The performance and selection was disappointing to say the least.

  16. Looks like the Chickens are, er, all coming home to roost! Mismanagement on so many levels over so many years has caught up with us. Alexander is self-evidently a good bloke but is he proactive enough, ruthless enough, tough enough to sort this squad out? Does he have the capacity to be unpleasant and get players out in order to bring players in. It doesn’t look like it and it’s now getting too late in this window. I feel sorry for him because he’s been dealt an atrocious hand but he doesn’t actually appear to be even getting the best out of what he’s got. Surely, the trigger-happy CEO can’t sack another one so soon – especially after spending a month with his exhaustively diligent search for this one. I sense playing Young was the club’s desperate attempt to appease disgruntled fans. It suggests they’d over-priced the player and suddenly realised his potential goals were worth more to us than the fee being offered. So what happens now? Does anybody know? The thing is if you do the highly unorthodox by appointing a young and inexperienced executive, backing your inspired hunch that he’s a veritable whiz kid – and it turns out he isn’t, you shouldn’t be that surprised if things go badly wrong. And maybe you should admit that it is an experiment that’s gone wrong and remedy it, not allow him to carry on hiring and firing others hoping, like a reckless gambler, the next punt will come off. In the real world it doesn’t work like that. Achtung! Achtung!

  17. Can we let Stephen gent loose again this summer after last summer’s shocking recruitments??…the obvious answer has gotta be no…how on earth as this bloke had a part in signing some of these is beyond me!…who is gent anyway?…was he a footballer?..or just a jumped up agent with dodgy contacts offloading there crap onto us!!!

  18. I’ve had enough. Giving up on this. It’s detrimental to my health and wellbeing

  19. The radio Leeds interview with GA was very telling and showed how delusional he really is and that he has potential lost the dressing room It shows how and why the MK Dons sacked GA and how bad Sparks is at appointing managers and for this reason he should be sacked as CEO. As he has not got one right and spent a fortune in compensation. What happens if we continue to lose? In the past Sparks has interviewed Wellens and Wild and didn’t appoint either of them. Bradford City have gained a bad reputation in football after what Adam’s said about us which summed up the club well. This is the reason why the Cowley’s and Robinson turned City down. Worrying times.

  20. I’m not going again until either Rupp leaves (unlikely) or there is a properly organised protest

  21. 20/1 at BetFred to reach the play offs. Considering our league position, and the current mood I the squad, I’d say that was decent odds!

    • We’d need to average more than 2 points a game for the remainder of the season. To put that in context, replicate the form to date of Wrexham and Stockport until this point. Those are not decent odds. Richmond would look at that, and not sanction any further spending in this transfer window, and get rid of dead wood now. Keep back funds for summer to allow the money to be more sensibly spent

      • Yes I agree, it will take an amazing turnaround on our part, but bookies ain’t stupid. Walsall, Harrogate and all the teams around us are all on much taller odds. I still believe we have a squad strong enough to make inroads to the play offs. But I am the eternal optimist..

      • Glenn if you’re still an Associate Director, is there any truth in the rumour that RS is ‘closing’ this down and losing this stream of income?
        Thanks.

  22. I’m becoming very despondent with this whole city setup it’s just like a car tearing down a hill with no brakes. When!!! And not if how much damage will be cause. We’ve got talented players at the club some injured admittedly but others just not given the run of the green .This manager is a conman like every salesman he can talk the talk but certainly can’t walk the walk . Fans are saying if we’re not careful we could get relegated (could)!!! If we don’t turn this mess around we Will!!! Get relegated. Last season we missed out in playoffs and with bit of recruitment pre-season I and many others thought we would push on to autos this season. What the hell as gone wrong. From a very disgruntled 50+ year fan .

  23. I wouldn’t mind hoofball so much if we were winning with it – hmm, these opening words gave me a flashback to a heated debate with Leighton James back in the dark, dark days of John Docherty – however, yesterday was abysmal – absolutely atrocious – some of the worst football I’ve seen in the last 36 years, and in a horrible ground to boot.
For me, from the starting XI, only Halliday came out with any credit. We were slightly less bad after the break, but still aimless – some nice touches from Young & Pointon, but just like us, they must be wondering what the grand plan is!

  24. Unless somebody gives Rupp the price he wants he will stay as owner and he is the best custodian we are going to get right now. We have financial stability. Silly protests may see him walk away? What happens then?
However, Sparks and Gent are far from fireproof. Both have failed in their jobs and need to be replaced by more capable people.

  25. I’m finding it hard getting myself motivated to watch Bradford City.
After so many set backs season after season it’s become impossible to justify spending money on another season tkt and other associated costs to the matchday experience.
I have to say after many year’s of supporting I have run out of energy.
There’s a divide between the supporters and the football Club that looks like Rupp and Sparkes have also run out of energy.
The entertainment level is very poor due to the style and tactics of play.
I’m afraid there’s no quick fix for the club.
New owners and fresh energy is needed with a long term plan.

  26. MK Dons have the foresight to dip into the National League to appoint a young up and coming manager. Look at them now, jumped from 16th to virtually into the automatic spots. We Appoint their Reject. What a mess!

  27. If the club was to seriously get itself back in order, I’d convince Kev Mac take it on until end of the season. It’s not like he’s playing much anyway. The players had respect for him. His tactics were a hybrid of Hughes and Alexander.

Season’s over. Clear communication and direction from those running the club is needed.

I can’t see Alexander changing from the hoof. It’s not effective as much as passing the ball around at the back was not effective for Hughes.

Sacking managers isn’t normally the answer, but at the moment die hard supporters aren’t going to renew season tickets.

The club need to lay out plans and set out clear objectives and be held accountable if targets aren’t achieved.

We’ve lost belief all over again!

  28. Why as GA changed his style of football so dramatically only he knows after the Notts county first half he started playing attractive to the eye decent attacking styled football.
Then for some absurd reason he started playing Docherty football.
This style of football through its abhorant ugly nature HAS TO WORK RESULTS WISE100 %–or through its nature football fans will quickly get sick of watching it.
Im on the train home from Swindon now thinking why do our dedicated fans pay big bucks following team all over place to watch this sack of sh##e

  29. It’s truly amazing how other clubs, smaller and less fancied than ours, manage to do all-things-football much better than us. They seem to have a better eye for players and get more out of them than we did if they once played for us. Why is this? Out transfer guru is perhaps still a dining out on three or four decent signings but if you chose 30 almost randomly you would expect at least ten per cent to be good. I’m guessing that Sparks and Gent now depend on each other for their job. Sack one and surely the other has to go. Sparks appointed Gent and signed off his recommendations. Some of the three-year deals make no sense at all. If your ambition is to achieve promotion and you sign a player for that length of time you are backing your judgment that he can play at a higher level. If it subsequently emerges he’s barely League 2 standard what does it say about your judgment? If I’m right that Sparks and Gent have necessarily formed some kind of mutually self-protective pact, I pity poor Alexander, the outsider, having to work with them trying to sort out problems of their creation for which they accept no blame.

    • Please can you explain the 4 decent signings Gent had organised for City – Lewis was signed by Hughes from his previous club Southampton and the lad from Harrogate was good . Other than that I am struggling.

  30. This is a fantastic piece. Agree with every point. Difficult to understand some of GA decisions and opinions. I know we can’t expect him to explain every decision but there are some (faith in Oduor, Smallwood on set pieces, hoofball, not picking anyone with any creativity, traditional centre forward but no width, Platt disappearing) that 90% would probably agree with and deserves some sort of comment. There maybe 5 or 6 good L2 players in what is too old a squad with not enough pace. Sadly with the exception of Pointon the younger players are offering nothing

  31. The transfer window closes in a few days and no doubt City will bring in a couple of players in panic mode. I’m not holding much hope of anyone exciting coming though. What has happened with City’s recruitment? Some of our recent loan signings were very good e.g Josh Cullen, Reece Burke, Lewis O’Brien and Scott Banks. Compare them to our recent ones. And why wait until deadline day when it was obvious we needed a boost from when the transfer window opened

  32. In my opinion it’s too soon to talk about a new manager. However I did think we had better options off the pitch than on. So I do blame GA for not giving us the best chance to win.

    • We can’t keep changing managers, we’ve got.to give someone chance to build and build properly and it must be costing us a fortune in compensation which could be spent on the squad.

I do think there’s a big danger that the crowds will drop massively if we aren’t successful with hoof ball football though, I’m already expecting a massive drop off in season ticket sales, but play like we did yesterday and dont grind out the results even more will drop away. If the club wants to stick with Alexander they might just need to accept and budget for a massive loss in revenue and be willing to subsidise it for a couple of years.
