The Width of a Post podcast #57: I’ll take your smallest set of off-road tyres please

The latest edition of the Width of a Post podcast is now available!

As we move past the halfway point of the season, there is so much going on at Bradford City. Jason McKeown, Tim Penfold and Alex Scott attempt to get through all the major talking points and reflect on an up and down period for the club.

In this episode:

  • The State of Bantams Nation 2024: why is the season predictably not going to plan, and who is accountable?
  • January twists and turns: Lewis has gone, Young is seemingly off, Walker and Wright have come in. Who’s calling the shots?
  • Communication: is it time for a fans forum? It’s in the club charter.
  • Early impressions: Graham Alexander’s first two months in charge have seen a significant change in approach, will it be successful?
  • Mid-table flight path: with City well off the promotion pace, why the next few games really matter.
  • He used to work in the Co-op: as James Hanson retires, a heartfelt tribute to Big Jim’s remarkable City career.

  1. I see the inimitable Woody quotes the WOAP state of the nation poll in his latest trashing of the Club. Great idea to stir the pot a bit more vigorously at a sticky time for the Club. You should know better

  2. Sparks did NOT say Alexander was his “first choice”! He said “Everything considered, I have no doubt in my mind that Graham is the number one candidate for this job, and I’m absolutely thrilled to get him over the line.”

I think it is important to quote Sparks accurately during a podcast especially if what he is said to have said is going to be used to imply he wasn’t telling the truth.

  3. The clubs own charter ( see the website) and that of the EFL.states that the club should have two fans forums per season.
If they don’t they are contravening their own charter.
I understand there have been several requests for a fans forum recently and the club refuse to have one.
The Supporters Board should be putting pressure on the club to comply. They are the only group representing the fans at the moment.

  4. “Do you feel confident in the ability of those who run #bcafc to make good decisions?”

In politics and among pollsters this question would be considered a ‘weasel’, one which by the cunning of its wording actually built in a bias. Who in fairness could say that the management was incapable of making ANY good decisions! Actually I don’t believe there was an intention to allow or urge those who answered to use this semantic quibble to cop out of condemnation. But it is surely damning that given its existence more than 80 per cent recorded a no.

    • In fairness there is nothing untoward or misleading in the question. The last 6 years of utter failure (one dismal surrender in the playoffs to speak of) shows the percentages recorded in the answer to that question have merit. Can’t blame Sparks for all that (I think he’s in his 4th year) but Rupp does have to answer as to why one of his business interests has gone backwards alarmingly during his tenure as owner.
16th in league 2 currently with clubs like Harrogate, Barrow and Morecambe above us paints a damning picture.
